As a transgender woman, I’ve experienced many obstacles in my life and I want to help others to overcome the adversities the same way that I did. With support from the right people.

Growing up and in early adulthood…I didn’t have the best home life. I made some wrong decisions that led my stepfather to kicking me out of the house.

Life didn’t get better for a while, and at times, I was even homeless.

How did you meet your boyfriend?

VERONICA:

I met my boyfriend when we went through the same treatment facility. I watched him grow and graduate through the program. He asked for my number, and we’ve been together ever since.

My boyfriend supports me by never leaving my side and always loving me for who I am.

As a transgender woman, I know firsthand that it’s not always easy getting access to healthcare. I don’t always feel seen or heard.

From my experience, not all healthcare providers know how to provide the gender-affirming care that I need.

When I first started taking steps to better my health, I had an experience with a healthcare provider that was unpleasant and it kind of traumatized me. It took me a while to get back on my healthcare journey after that.

That’s why I think it’s so important to find a healthcare provider who is compassionate and who you feel comfortable with.

How did you first learn about PrEP?

VERONICA:

I was introduced to PrEP at the transgender health clinic where I now work.

My now-manager was my patient advocate who helped answer all the questions I had about PrEP and told me how to get started.

After the second visit, my healthcare provider started me on an option of PrEP.

Changing perceptions

VERONICA:

I’ve seen firsthand how society can assume and make judgment towards people who are on PrEP, especially in the transgender community. I can understand how someone might be hesitant to even look into it.

It all comes down to educating ourselves and seeing PrEP for what it is: a way to help take care of your sexual health by helping to prevent HIV.

Why do you want to share your story?

I want to share my DESCOVY for PrEP story to show people like me, people who have experienced similar struggles, that it’s possible to help protect yourself from HIV one day at a time.

My family is scattered all over, but this will always be our home. We have a family reunion at the house every year. This year was number 101.

And of course, I have my two dogs—Boner and Puck. Both are rescues who were abandoned. They motivate me to stay active. So yes, it’s a three-way rescue.

Cooking Season

DEAN:

During the ‘cooking season,’ which is what I call Thanksgiving and Christmas, I like to bake for my friends. I don’t make fancy cakes, but I do make tasty ones. My favorite is carrot.

We have a lake here, Lake Martin. I enjoy walking around the shores, hunting artifacts and crystals, and sometimes dipping my toes in the water.

I retired in 2002 after teaching third and fourth grade for 26 years. Now, I work part-time at a donut shop…it keeps me on my toes.

GROWING UP

My coming out story? Well, my father was a quiet man—he never made a fuss over anything.

Coming out to my mother was a different story. She sent me to a psychiatrist.

After we got to talking, the psychiatrist said, ‘So, what’s the problem?’ I said, ‘Well, my mother doesn’t want me to be gay.’ And he said, ‘That sounds like more of a her problem than a you problem.’ That’s something that stuck with me.

About four years ago, I had not been feeling well for a little while and I wasn’t sure what was going on. One night, I finally sat down and had a conversation with myself...I had to find out my HIV status. I wasn’t going to continue living without knowing my HIV status. So, I drove 35 miles to get an overnight test. I took the test—the results were negative—and I thought well that’s it, I’m going to do everything I can to stay negative.

That’s when I decided to ask my doctor about my HIV prevention options, including PrEP medications.

STARTING A NEW CHAPTER

I’d seen people mention PrEP medication in their dating app profiles and asked my doctor about it. He didn’t know as much as I had hoped.

So, I decided to make an appointment at an HIV clinic recommended to me by a friend, roughly an hour and a half away. The people there were knowledgeable and encouraging—they never made me feel judged.

They tested me for HIV. My doctor at the clinic decided that PrEP medication was a good option for me. I still make the drive to the clinic for my tests regularly. It’s actually something I look forward to. They’re like family—I feel like they take good care of me.

I tell my friends who are sexually active that they should ask their healthcare provider if DESCOVY for PrEP is an option for them. Have that conversation no matter your age or where you are in life.

I feel like there’s a stigma about being on PrEP medications and I’m not sure why. I’m helping to reduce my chances of getting HIV. I think it’s never too late to make your sexual health, including HIV prevention, a priority.

If I meet someone on an app or I’m on a date, I don’t mind telling them, ‘I’m on DESCOVY for PrEP.’ I’m just about being open.

You don’t have to go to sleep at night wondering if you’ve done enough to help reduce your risk of HIV. You can start the conversation with your healthcare provider about HIV prevention options, including PrEP medications, at any age.

Tell us about growing up in Philadelphia

Growing up in the inner city of a place like Philadelphia, you experience a lot of things. There were financial struggles. We didn’t always have access to healthcare. I dealt with bullying, there were drugs, there was the hypocrisy of the church.

But there was also so much love. My parents encouraged us to look beyond what was in front of us.

So, I’m a public health consultant, specializing in HIV prevention and treatment. I encourage honest conversations about HIV to help break down stigmas and empower the Black, gay community.

Why share your story?

EVERETT:

In my experience, there is this learned stigma, especially within the Black community, that gay men have brought HIV upon themselves. We learn that stigma from somewhere, right? And I don’t know that we always realize that we can unlearn it.

I think it starts with general HIV education about HIV prevention.

There are some real conversations to be had with healthcare providers about PrEP medications, and about how they can help lower the risk of HIV.

I want the Black community to see that there are everyday people just like them taking DESCOVY for PrEP. It’s not some mystery pill, it’s not some secret, it’s something that can help prevent HIV.

Love living here; it’s definitely home. I love the Black history, the vibrant gay culture that Atlanta has really been shaped by.

When I first got on PrEP medication and I started talking about it, many of my white gay friends had already known about it and they were already on it.

I think it rolled out differently in the Black communities. I definitely got funny looks from some of my Black gay friends who I could tell had not been educated about PrEP medication early on. By sharing, I want to educate others like me that there are PrEP options to help reduce their risk of getting HIV.

Growing up, I always aspired to be involved in public policy in some way. I thought that joining the military would be a great stepping stone to my future career.

So, I enlisted right out of high school. The ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy was in effect at the time and I did have reservations given my sexual orientation, but I was reassured that it wouldn’t be an issue, as long as I kept my sexual orientation under wraps.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. A few of my fellow recruits found out that I was gay, and I was actually assaulted. I continued to experience harassment and I felt like it wasn’t safe for me to stay in the military. So I requested to be discharged.

WAS THERE A COMMUNITY RESPONSE TO YOUR DISCHARGE?

KYLE:

Some members of the media found out about my story, and it got picked up by several news organizations. However, I was very fortunate that coming out of this incident, members of the LGBTQIA2S+ community rallied around me and supported me, including an openly gay member of congress.

If it wasn’t for that support and those folks coming around me, that journey would’ve been much more difficult, and I don’t think that as an individual I could’ve made it through all of that alone.

The congressman reached out to offer me a job and he said, ‘Let’s make your dream a reality even without the military.’

The congressman being gay had a massive impact on me and the work that I do today.

He taught me that being queer and doing this work was a livable dream. After the congressman retired, I moved to Oklahoma for work and to be closer to my family. One day I heard the sitting mayor had resigned, and the town was having a special meeting to figure out who would replace her.

When they were announcing the nominations for candidates, to my surprise, someone stood up and nominated me. I gave an impromptu speech about myself, my public policy experience with the congressman, and that night I was elected mayor.

I contacted providers in Oklahoma City who were affirming and found one who discussed the risks and benefits of DESCOVY for PrEP. Together, we decided it would be a good option for me.

He also showed me the DESCOVY pill size compared to another PrEP medication, and I preferred how small the DESCOVY pill was.

I love seeing the transgender community represented along with other people in the DESCOVY for PrEP commercial. I feel it’s a big step forward for visibility.

But I haven’t seen enough transgender representation in advertising, so I want to help bring the visibility to the transgender community, and I want us to feel seen and heard. I think we need people from within the transgender community who can advocate for us and provide more representation for the community as a whole.

When did your own PrEP journey begin?

MYKA:

I first learned about PrEP medications from my senior PrEP coordinator at work. My first thought was, ‘Wow, I can’t believe something like this exists.’ When I was promoted to PrEP Navigator, my job was to help encourage my clients to learn more about their HIV prevention.

After doing some research, I decided that if I was now going to be recommending that my clients talk to their healthcare providers about PrEP medication, then maybe I should talk to my doctor as well.

So, I started a conversation with my doctor to determine whether PrEP medication would be right for me. I started with a different PrEP medication, and then after talking to my doctor, I switched to DESCOVY for PrEP last year.

For me, switching to DESCOVY for PrEP was relatively straightforward process…

How do you help transgender clients feel comfortable at your clinic?

MYKA:

From what I’ve seen, some of my transgender clients are actually afraid of going to a clinical setting because they are scared of being scrutinized or being misgendered. At my clinic, I challenged my co-workers to be better allies to the transgender community.

My family has always been really into music. Growing up, we would put music on to do any activity. If it was cleaning the house, cooking, having friends over—you name it—there was always some music playing in the background.

Later, I inherited my uncle’s record collection and it helped expose me to different types of rock music I wouldn’t necessarily have listened to.

I think my story may be a bit different than what people typically see in the media. It took me a while to fully identify as gay. When I was much younger, I thought I was 100% straight.

But then, I was a senior in high school, and I met this guy that I was really attracted to and it wasn’t until college that I fully understood my attraction to men.

I came to the realization that it didn’t matter. I liked and loved who I liked and loved and if anybody had an issue with that, it was absolutely their issue and not mine. Becoming confident and honoring myself was definitely a process.

I was actually really lucky in the way that I found a doctor who was very LGBTQ+ friendly. My doctor was the first to tell me that PrEP medications would be an appropriate choice for me.

So, when I filled my first prescription for PrEP medications, I didn’t realize the importance of taking the pill as the doctor directed. My doctor advised me that my PrEP medication was meant to be taken daily.

And I hadn’t thought about that. So, from then on, I made PrEP medications part of my daily routine.

INFLUENTIAL WOMEN

OLI:

There are a lot of women in my life that have absolutely inspired and supported me in being who I am. Growing up, I lived with my mom and my grandmother. My mother is my ‘biggest fan,’ if you will.

My amazing Grandmother

OLI:

My grandmother was very, very flamboyant. I picked up a lot of that flair from her.

Got hot in here, man. All this silk, man... is... oof.

We had these neighbors who would visit all the time…and three of them were drag queens and one was transgender and my grandmother affectionately referred to them as her girls. They were a huge influence in my life at that time and I was a bit of a shy kid, so being around them really helped me start to come out of my shell.

I was only about nine or ten when my neighbors began getting ‘sick,’ which is how people referred to HIV back in the day.

Instead of the girls coming over, my grandmother would go over to their house and start taking care of them. You know, she was still very open and accepting of the girls and there was no stigma at all, just love.

What happened to my neighbors was so tragic and I really think it’s a part of the reason why I’m such a strong advocate for HIV prevention, including PrEP medications.

Feeling the love

OLI:

One of the most valuable lessons that I took from the girls is that you have got to be in love with yourself first. It really doesn’t matter what others think of you, as long as you love yourself.

OLI:

My grandmother was a natural-born storyteller and would sometimes tell the same stories over and over again. I think she would correct me first if I was making a mistake and not telling the story correctly. But I think she would be proud of what I’m doing here.

What’s funny is I met my partner when I was younger, because our parents were friends. But we only became romantic partners after I returned from Chicago.

I was lucky enough to have my family be open about my sexual orientation, which I don’t think is common in the Latinx community.

There is unconditional love between parents and children, and I don’t even fathom it being differently. He has an incredible heart and shares it with the world.

Before being with Rey, I thought PrEP medications seemed like a good idea for other people, but at the time, I didn’t know enough about HIV prevention, and PrEP medications, to realize it may be a good option for me.

One of the first things we talked about was his HIV-positive status, and how we could be in a sexual relationship and that started an education process in me about PrEP medications that probably was way overdue.

What was your reaction when you first learned about Rey’s status?

SERGIO:

I had a brief moment of hesitation when I learned about his status. What helped me was he had brought it up very early in the relationship and made me feel comfortable with it.

When I told my parents that he was HIV-positive, they’re very accepting.

As long as they knew that I was taking care of my sexual health and taking the proper precautions.

REY:

Since day one, they welcomed me like their own and just treated me with open arms with no judgment.

When did you decide to speak to your doctor about PrEP medications?

SERGIO:

After talking to my partner in greater detail about PrEP medications, I decided it was worth having a conversation with my doctor. My doctor recommended DESCOVY for PrEP. He discussed with me the risks and the benefits and we agreed that it was the right choice for me.

I think there's a lot that can be done in the Latinx community, Hispanic Mexican community, to make sure they have the right tools and the right education to know that there are options out there for them, and I think it's important for them to be able to talk to their doctor about PrEP medications.

I grew up in a mostly conservative town, a lot of the doctors weren't LGBTQ-friendly, and having that conversation about reducing the risk of HIV was a little difficult, but once I got over that fear and felt comfortable talking to my doctor, we decided that PrEP medication was right for me. The first time my doctor talked about DESCOVY for PrEP, I had already been taking a previous PrEP medication, and he had said that potentially switching over might be a right option for me.

He discussed with me the potential risks and benefits, and he said, ‘This is a small pill,’ and showed me. Here's the thing, I trust what my doctor recommends when it comes to my sexual health. So I decided to switch to DESCOVY for PrEP. He wrote me the prescription that day.

DESCOVY for PrEP fits into my daily routine. I usually take it during the morning. It just goes down with a sip of water.

I think a big part of sharing my story is to help educate communities that are like me, that are Latinx, that are Mexican, that are Hispanic, that might not know that there is something out there that can help you protect yourself from getting HIV. And I just think that's really important to talk about it, to normalize that conversation, because knowledge is power. And I think just having access to information is the most important part.
